2 dead in campus shooting at University of North Carolina at Charlotte; 4 others hurt, reports say
two people were fatally shot on campus Tuesday at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and four others were hurt, two with life-threatening injuries, the Mecklenburg EMS Agency confirmed to media outlets Tuesday night.
Police sources said the suspected shooter had been detained, according to news outlets.
A red alert on the school's website warned “ACTIVE ASSAILANT” and urged: "Remain in a safe location."
Police "believe there is no other threat on campus," according to a tweet by Morgan Fogarty, an anchor and reporter for WCCB in Charlotte. She cited police sources.
There was no information about the identity of the shooter or a possible motive.
“Shots have been reported in the area of kennedy. The campus is in lockdown. Secure yourself immediately and remain there until further notice,” read a campus “NinerAlert” emailed to the UNCC community and tweeted by the school at 5:50pm.
Kennedy is an administrative building near the center of campus, an area with several restaurants where students gather.
Shortly before 7 p.m., the NinerAlert account tweeted: “Law enforcement is individually sweeping buildings on campus. Follow officer commands.”
Aerial shots from local television news outlets showed police officers running toward a building, while another view showed students running on a campus sidewalk.
Tuesday was the last day of classes on campus. A concert, free for students, by Waka Flocka Flame had been scheduled for the Jerry Richardson football stadium on campus.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.
