EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.-- Well, that was certainly interesting and somewhat unexpected first day, wasn’t it?.
The New York Giants began to address holes on their roster on Day 1 of the annual NFL Draft, filling three positions of need—quarterback, defensive tackle and cornerback.
That wasn’t the problem though, at least in the minds of those not on the team’s payroll that watched the draft unfold.
No, the perceived problem was with the value the Giants assigned on each of those three positions—Duke quarterback Daniel Jones, taken sixth overall; Clemson defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence, taken at No. 17; and Georgia cornerback DeAndre Baker, taken with the 30th overall pick after the Giants shipped their second-round pick (No. 37), the fourth-round pick they got in a trade with the Saints for cornerback Eli Apple (No. 132), and the fifth round pick they got in a trade with Detroit for Damon Harrison (No. 142) to Seattle.
Jones, by all appearances an intelligent, respectful young man, is probably going to get the bulk of the ire from the fanbase and the media, right or wrong, deserved or otherwise.
Why? For over a year, Gettleman and the Giants were hammered for passing up on a quarterback in last year’s deep class, instead opting to select the Offensive Rookie of the Year Saquon Barkley with the No. 2 overall pick.
When faced with an opportunity to trade for Josh Rosen, one of the quarterbacks in last year’s class, the Giants preferred Jones, the David Cutcliffe groomed quarterback whose resemblance and mannerisms to Eli Manning are so eerily similar that you’d swear they were brothers separated at birth.
To begin to understand why Gettleman, who hinted that Jones and Kentucky edge rusher Josh Allen had identical grades on the Giants draft board, chose a quarterback who is likely going to ride the pine for much of the upcoming season (same as Manning did when he was acquired via trade in 2004), the Giants are clearly hoping that they might be able to catch lightning in a bottle again with the Cutcliffe trained Jones.
