Tropical Storm Dorian could strengthen to hurricane as it reaches Caribbean

'
Forecasters have issued a tropical storm warning for Barbados as Tropical Storm Dorian, the fourth tropical storm of the 2019 season, approached the island off the coast of northeastern South America on Sunday morning. Authorities in St. Lucia, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines have issued storm watches, and the National Hurricane Center said additional watches and warnings would likely be issued later Sunday as the storm approaches the Windward and Leeward islands, which include Dominica and Martinique. As of 8 a.m. EDT, the storm was moving west about 14 mph but is expected to begin turning more northward on Monday and Tuesday, forecasters said. "It is too soon to determine the specific timing or magnitude of impacts in Puerto Rico or Hispaniola, but interests in those areas should monitor the progress of Dorian," the center's forecasters said Sunday morning.
Barbados is about 583 miles southeast of Puerto Rico.

On the forecast track, Dorian is expected to be near the central Lesser Antilles late Monday or early Tuesday, and currently has maximum sustained winds of about 40 mph, with higher gusts. Forecasters expect Dorian to strengthen over the next
48 hours,

and say it could reach hurricane strength as it reaches the eastern Caribbean. Tropical-storm-force winds currently extend outward up to 25 miles, forecasters said.
